Listening to #there

Listening to #there

Caption

"Listening to #there" treats information space as a new field. It takes audio data circulating on social media in relation to specific places as environmental sound for those places, then trains, generates, and recomposes those sounds with AI. On social media, cities are consumed primarily as visual objects. On platforms such as Instagram, the sound environment that should be resonating on site is often replaced by trending music or narration, deliberately muted, and edited. Through these operations, such audio begins to function as an urban sound environment formed within media, distinct from the physical city. It is a city reconstructed through edited vision and hearing, and consumed through media rather than grounded bodily experience. This work applies that method to Paris as it circulates on social media. By experiencing Paris as sound through overlapping media layers, the work considers the relationship between audio circulating in information space and the city, and aims to re-examine how we perceive the contemporary urban environment.
